Have you ever noticed others with a double chin and thought you could avoid developing one of your own? Many of us have, until one day we wake up and see our own second or even third chin looking back at us in the mirror.

Is Weight Gain To Blame?

If you have an issue with weight, getting rid of your double chin could be as easy as improving your overall health by developing an exercise routine. You might want to take up swimming, jogging, dancing or go to the gym, for example.

You could also try changing your diet. That could help you lose weight, get rid of your double chin and have more energy. Eating healthy can also prevent a lot of other problems, such as diabetes and heart trouble, so you can't lose by exercising.

Exercise Can Be Used On Your Face Too!

Speaking of exercising, whether your double chin comes from a weight problem or from genetics, you can perform face exercises to get rid of your double chin.

An effective facial exercise is called the shovel exercise and it's used to work a muscle located in your jaw called the platysma. Basically, it calls for opening your mouth as wide as you can and moving your bottom lip over your bottom teeth. Then simply move your jaw up and down.

You can also perform several different facial expressions to exercise the muscles in your face. Try smiling, frowning, making a surprised look and more. All of these things can help you control your double chin problem.

An additional exercise you can try is holding an object underneath your chin while opening your mouth as wide as you can. You might try using a tennis ball or baseball or, if you don't have one of those handy, an apple would work just fine. Having a round object under your chin will give you some added resistance while you exercise.

The muscles you need to be concerned with are the same ones you use for chewing. Now, since gaining weight will only add to your double chin problems, that doesn't mean you should constantly eat. Instead, try chewing some sugarless gum. Chewing gum gives your jaw plenty of exercise.
