Pregnant women often find themselves suffering from acne. These breakouts can last the entire pregnancy or appear at various stages. Many women wonder what products are safe to use during pregnancy. Rest assured, you do have options. Of course you should consult your doctor before using any acne product while pregnant.

Acne during pregnancy is generally caused by changes in hormone levels, not by the more common causes of clogged pores or bacteria beneath the skin. As such, all pregnant women are susceptible to breakouts, regardless of whether bouts of acne were a problem in the past. Having had clear, healthy skin your whole life will not make you immune to acne while pregnant.

Good skin care while pregnant starts by gently cleansing your face each morning and again at night. This may not be enough to prevent acne during pregnancy, however. In addition, you might consider using an additional acne treatment. If this is the case, speak with your doctor as there are acne remedies that are safe for pregnant women and acne treatments that should be avoided.

Over the counter remedies applied topically can be safe to use, but exercise caution and speak with your doctor first. Treatments containing benzoyl peroxide, low concentrations of salicylic acid or erythromycin are usually considered safe for use while pregnant.

Oral acne remedies should be avoided since many contain ingredients that are not safe for pregnant women. The only time you should consider taking such acne medications is when your doctor has prescribed one for you.

Treatments labeled "all natural" need to be approached with caution. Natural or herbal remedies are not necessarily safe for pregnant women. As always, follow your doctor's advice before applying any treatment.

Women are prone to outbreaks of acne during pregnancy unfortunately, but acne does not have to go untreated while pregnant. Incorporating a doctor approved acne treatment into your normal skin care routine can result in having healthy skin during pregnancy.
