Psychological Effects of Acne on Teens – It Can Be More Serious Than You Think

If you didn't know, acne can greatly affect your psychological health. In some instances, you might feel insecure and unworthy even though the acne lesion is not too severe. This just means that your psychological health can still be affected even with the least severe acne lesion such as whiteheads and blackheads.
If you are in your teenage years, you are more susceptible to the psychological and social impact of acne. During these years, it is no surprise if you are too concerned about developing your personality and social skills. Ironically, as a teen, you have come across with the idea that to be accepted by your peers you should have good looks and clear complexion.
To most teens, any signs of acne can make a person look less appealing. With this kind of thinking, more teenagers develop other problems associated to this skin condition.
One of the psychological impacts of acne to teenagers is low self-esteem. With low self-esteem and insecurity, these teens will usually fail to make eye contact during conversation. They also hide their acne with their hair and heavy makeup.
Acne also affects the social behavior of a teenager. These teens, at a young age, sacrifice their dreams and activity just to hide the acne on their body. As a result, their social network is impaired as they resort to social withdrawal.
Furthermore, the psychological effect is worsened because of cruel taunts from other teens. With low self-confidence, they do not have the courage to face the opposite sex and form a relationship. In worse cases, these teenagers develop social phobia. Thus, even school performance is impaired.
These teenagers also feel depress and cry spontaneously without a clear explanation. They feel useless and worthless, and thus they are easily misunderstood. Sadly, suicide is often the result of untreated depression.
In conclusion, acne must be treated immediately if it already interferes the life of a teenager. Further, acne with psychological effects should be treated with a doctor's supervision.
