Even with your eye protection on, just for added safety, many authorities recommend keeping your eyes closed for the duration of the tanning session. It is not uncommon for UV rays to damage parts of the eye beyond the point of repair, so you can never take too many precautions.

Cataracts are very common to varying degrees. More exposure to UV rays increases the amount of cataracts that could build up. If surgery doesn't go well you could very well end up blind.

Tanning lotions are recommended by many health associations because of the relative safety they offer in contrast to other methods.
