A Look at Herbal Skin Care Products
November 19, 2008 by Lindelwa Maseko · 2 Comments
Skin care is not something new as it has been in practice since ancient times, when herbal skin care was probably the only way to take care of skin. The skin care market changed forever when chemical based products became available which have taken over the skin care market from herbal products. Not only have many of the recipes been lost but herbal products are not as popular as they once were as science has gradually changed people's attitudes towards skin care.
Perhaps it is our fast paced lives and the ease with which we can purchase just about any synthetically produced item that has helped with the decrease in using natural preparations. Large skin care manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon that has come about in all things natural but their herbal preparations have to be mixed with some kind of preservative if they are to last which means they are not as good as home made ones.
It seems that increasing numbers of people are becoming more discerning and using herbal skin care products again from companies that are specializing in making small batches of these products. Still it will never be a huge market an as no-one really wants to make them in their own home, commercial products are likely to continue; below are a few that you may or may not know of.
Aloe vera is probably the best known which is an extract from Aloe plant and is one of the best examples of herbal skin care product plus freshly extracted aloe vera is a natural hydrant that helps to heal cuts, treat sun burns and in soothing skin. Other household herbs like dandelion, chamomile, lime flowers and rosemary are good at cleansing but usually when they are in combination with other herbs.
You may not know about the herbal antiseptic qualities of other herbs like lavender, marigold, thyme and fennel and the use of lavender water and rose water have been known to have skin toning properties for a very long time. Tea plays an important part in herbal skin care and tea extracts are used for treatment of skin that has been damaged by UV radiation.
You may also be familiar with herbal oil extracts like tea tree, primrose and lavender which are the most popular and used for a variety of reasons. Certain skin conditions can also be helped with oils extracted from plants in herbal skin care preparations.
Although it is not something that is mentioned very often but herbal skin care products rarely have any adverse effects on the user and as you can produce them at home, they are very attractive to people trying to avoid anything synthetic. While herbal products will probably remain popular as there are so few reactions to them that there will be times when synthetic products will be necessary for certain skin disorders.
We all need to look after our skin by whatever means we can as it is the main barrier against disease and takes a great deal of punishment in the modern climate we all live in.

November 13, 2008 by Dane Masters · Leave a Comment
Aging is just a fact of life, yet the older we get the harder and harder we try to fight the process of aging. While some of us are content to age gracefully and with dignity, others feel that aging is akin to dying, and the more youthful they appear, the longer they have to live. One of our most hardest fought battles with aging involves making wrinkles diminish and preventing them from appearing in the first place. It would seem that in our society having wrinkles is a sign of giving in and accepting old age, rather than a sign of having lived, and still living and interesting and full life.
Are you attempting to remove wrinkles and stay young forever? Well, I must say good luck to you. In reality, we all inevitably age. There's simply no way around the issue. However, now there are ways to remove wrinkles and effectively treat and prevent the signs of aging. The key is tackling this issue in the right fashion.
If you haven't received your recent dose of reality television, then you probably haven't viewed any of the shows dealing with plastic surgery. Yikes! These programs always make me cringe. They're filled with unsatisfied individuals who are looking to enlarge their breasts, have their thighs vacuumed, or possibly remove wrinkles from their weathered brow.
Botox is an alternative to plastic surgery. This solution involves the injection of a mild strain of botulism under the skin in several areas where wrinkles are prevalent, such as on the forehead or around the eyes. The solution paralyzes the nerves underneath t he skin which gives the skin a more smoothed appearance. Botox only lasts a few months before it wears off and has to be repeated.
Other ways to remove wrinkles are a tad less intimidating. Have you taken a browse through the latest anti-wrinkle creams and treatments? In all honesty, there are more than a few to go around. Jump online and you will be flooded with creams and serums that help remove wrinkles. If you don't already know, one of the most effective routes concerning wrinkles involves starting young. Begin taking care of yourself at an early age. This way you will prevent those fine lines from appearing immediately after you hit 30. Because let's face it, you don't need to remove wrinkles if you don't have them in the first place.

November 10, 2008 by Celeste Lynne · 1 Comment
If you think that only teenagers get acne, you couldn't be further from the truth. Adults can easily get acne too. If you know someone with adult acne, or if you have it yourself, you can get rid of it. All you have to do is learn everything you possibly can about it and learn to separate urban acne legends from the true ways to remove acne.
What is acne? Well, acne it a fairly common skin condition. Normally, the skin produces oils, which help it to stay moisturized. When the skin gets too oily, though, the pores get plugged up. That causes pus-filled pimples and cysts to appear on the skin. Those pimples and cysts are both ugly and, usually, uncomfortable.
Causes of Acne
Diet plays a role in acne, according to many people. That may well be true, but it isn't the only cause. It's only a contributing factor. There are many things that can create an acne problem.
Everyone has oil glands that help to moisturize their skin. If your glands produce too much oil, it can definitely cause or contribute to your acne problem. Also, if dirt or other debris clogs your pores, that can create acne issues too. In fact, anything that causes your skin to be irritated or inflamed can cause acne.
Clear Pimples From Your Skin
Proper skin care is a major first step towards clearing up your acne issues. To take care of your skin properly, you need to avoid adding extra oil to it, since it's probably already too oily. By using oil-free skin care products and make up, you can really make a difference in your skin quality. In fact, it's also very important to remove all of your make up in the evenings, before you go to bed for the night. That way, you won't leave oils on your skin all night long.
There are many acne treatment options out there and, depending on how severe your acne problem is, you might have to explore several options. It can take time to find an acne solution that isn't just a quick fix, after all. You need to be willing to keep an open mind and make yourself aware of all of the acne treatments that are out there.
When it comes to acne treatments, the good news is that there are tons of options available. You could use creams or ointments, if you have a mild case. You could even make your own acne remedies right in your own home. If you have severe acne, though, you may need medical intervention to treat it. You should definitely consult your doctor or a dermatologist, if that's the case. They can help you to find the right treatment, which could include prescription medication. Although, they may just recommend a few changes in your diet or routine.
Clearer skin is not impossible. All you have to do is find the right acne treatment and remember to use it. You need to be consistent. If you skip treatments, your acne problems will never clear up, after all. So, follow the instructions on the treatment labels or from your doctor and clear up your acne quickly.

October 21, 2008 by Julie Samtsonn · Leave a Comment
A big part of getting older is facing the fact that your skin will start aging, causing wrinkles and sagging. When the first fine lines and wrinkles start to appear, it could be that it is time to panic and start buying up in bulk anything on the market that promises to cure wrinkles. But have you taken a look lately at all the different anti aging creams and anti wrinkle creams? The science of skin aging, would dictate that the damage is certainly done by the time you begin to notice lines and wrinkles and anything you use would only be a short term fix. In fact, stop using the creams and the wrinkles and lines return very fast.
Skin aging progresses and starts in the early years, with over-exposure to the sun, and climates of dry, cold winters, and hot summers and all the external elements that cause oxidants to attack the skin cells and accelerate the fat stores in cells, that hold the vitamins and hydration to keep them appearing plump. Once the fat stores are reduced, they start to shrivel and dry and do not reproduce new cell growth as quickly. The turnover of cells slows, to where the outer layer of skin is composed of older, more weathered cells. These older cells appear dull, lack a glow, and facial muscle contractions have started forming intense wrinkles in the form of smile lines, frown lines, brow lines, crow's feet and general sagging from the beginning breakdown of facial muscles, and many rush to the aid of anti-aging creams and anti wrinkle creams to help reduce the appearances.
The best way to prevent aging skin is to limit things like sun exposure, especially in the hottest parts of the day. Always use quality sun block that will limit UV ray exposure andwear sunglasses. Sunglasses will help block UV rays and protect the fine skin around the eye area. Avoid Tanning Beds, these things are death traps that use UV rays to accelerate tanning. It's more harmful to your skin than regular sun exposure and doesn't provide any of the natural nutrients or benefits you will get from sunlight. Make sure you eat a healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables so that you get lots of antioxidants. Antioxidants promote healthy cell production and eliminate damaging toxins from your body. Take vitamins and supplements like Vitamin A, C and E to help promote healthy skin cell growth. Don't smoke, this is for many health reasons, but particularly for your skin. The oxidants and toixins produced by smoking slow skin cell turnover and promote wrinkles.
Use Antioxidant enriched skin care products, and ones that promote hydrating, as dry skin cells, tend to make you look older and should be exfoliated. Focus on eye area skin care, because this is where aging shows first with puffiness and fine lines, because of the thinner skin in the area. Use Retinol A products to remove dead, dry skin cells, usually found in the form of chemical peels, to show the healthy, new cells underneath and promote new cell growth, elastin and collagen production.
These hints will help prevent premature aging, along with the use of anti aging creams and anti wrinkle creams. Don't wait until you start seeing the signs to start preventing aging skin symptoms.

The psychological harm acne can cause people should not be underestimated; however, many effective acne treatments are available. This is a skin complaint that affects many people around the world so scientific research to find a cure is fierce; these days, even with serious cases, there are many skin care treatments available. Although the number of acne skin care products and treatments might at first seem endless, they can actually be categorized into three areas: Preventative: Creams, lotions etc. to help cleanse and tone the skin Over-the-Counter: Treatments for conditions that do not require prescription Prescription only: doctors or dermatologists prescribe special treatments
A lot of skin care products are used as a measure to prevent acne; these products can be anything from skin cleansers to makeup removers. Many people use products similar to this every day as part of their skin care regime; often this is irrespective of whether or not there is a problem condition. Many of these cleansers act in almost exactly the same way as acne skin care products; devised primarily to limit the amount of oil or sebum forming in the pores. These products prevent the oil from getting trapped in pores and can hamper the growth of bacteria, this can lead to the bad skin condition.
Other skin care treatments can help exfoliate the skin; there is now a variety of this type of product available over the counter. This type of peel helps reduce the chance of oil clogging up the pores as well as removing other skin impurities; this can reduce the bacterium growth on your skin. Many different, specially formulated acne skin care products designed to reduce the problems have now been made available without prescription. These formulations contain the chemical benzoyl peroxide and the naturally occurring salicylic acid; they are designed to extract the excess oil that bacteria need to promote the development of acne.
Generally it is best to start using this type of product with only a small amount of benzoyl peroxide (less than 5.5 percent is recommended), just to see how the skin reacts; a safer alternative to benzoyl peroxide is anything containing alpha hydroxy acid. Because we all have different types of skin, more than one type of acne skin care product may need to be tried; if nothing you use is effective then speak to your dermatologist for advice. On-prescription treatments are prescribed by a dermatologist and can include ointments that can be applied on the affected area or oral antibiotics or just any topical ointment.
Your dermatologist may suggest a minor surgical procedure to remove the contents of pustules; this is not something you should ever attempt yourself. Your doctor may even suggest a course of hormone therapy as a skin care treatment; studies show that hormone based skin care treatments often prove effective. Tackling this skin condition is not the problem it once was and if treated properly permanently marked skin does not have to happen.

September 29, 2008 by Clare J Hubbard · Leave a Comment
Anti-Aging skin care products are proliferating to address a worldwide preoccupation with looking younger. Just how effective are these products likely to be. This, of course, will depend a great deal on the ingredients, how they are formulated and the extent of research and clinical trials to prove effectiveness. The article below that we found delves into many of these details. Please read on.
How effective are anti aging skin products?
Peoples' preoccupation with anti-aging skin care products that claim to make you look younger is not surprising; it is not unreasonable to want to continue looking youthful for as long as possible when you consider how much longer most of us are living! We achieve this with beauty products that synthesize the production of the protein collagen; with around a quarter of our skin protein being collagen, the importance of this substance has not gone unnoticed. Collagen is a member of another family of substances that aid in reducing the signs of ageing. called antioxidants, they help flush out toxins from the body and help reduce the signs of aging.
You probably know many anti-oxidants by name, including vitamin C, the use of which is still, even now, hotly debated in the science and nutrition community. Vitamin C formulated skin care treatments suffer with a particular problem of oxidizing on contact with the air which causes a problem for users and manufacturers.
More stable skin care treatments are now available that are almost as efficient and actually cost less to manufacture. These new anti-oxidant products are not quite as good as vitamin C although other naturally occurring compounds, vitamin E and lipoic acid can achieve the same effect.
Found in human blood, vitamin E is not only an antioxidant but is designed to increase the immune system's resistance to disease and can also help ward off cancer. Lipoic acid is also an energy making component of the body, found in every cell, it can also help reduce the ageing process which affects the skin.
Phytochemicals aren't produced by the body but are extracted from a number of plants and used in many anti-ageing skin care products to combat the signs of ageing. A further benefit of these phytochemicals is their ability to prevent the onset of breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer all of which are on the increase globally.
Other vitamins from the B group are also used in anti-ageing skin care like vitamins B5, B6 and B12 for example. Although the area of anti-ageing skin care products is huge, more is being learnt about the whole ageing process and about natural products that can reduce the effects it has on our bodies as well as our skin.
Whilst a great deal has been learned about this subject, it is only the tip of the iceberg and more long term effective methods need to be discovered to reverse or slow down the effects of time. With the research that is now taking place, many people are confident that in time, more effective, cheaper anti-ageing skin care products will be discovered.
In some respects the real way ahead lies in our own hands as there are many things we can do to reduce the signs of ageing naturally. Regular sleep patterns, exercise, a good healthy diet and less stress will all contribute to reducing the signs of ageing.

September 27, 2008 by Amanda Beaty · Leave a Comment
In this day and time even men should take good care of their skin. Women are not the only ones that should do skin care. Many manufacturers have now realized that men are in the market for products to use on their skin. Men's skin care products such as face wash and body wash are seen in the stores now. We need to examine how men need to care for their skin.
Men's pores are a bit larger in size than women's and their skin usually is a bit oilier too. This helps dirt collect on the skin and clog pores. This means that men need to cleanse their skin with a similar routine as women have used for years. Soap is not the best cleanser for the face because it usually is too rough on the skin and does not completely rinse off. Face washes and body washes are much better designed for this task.
Facial washes deep clean the face and rinse clean leaving no film whatsoever. Getting the pores unclogged and free from dirt allows the skin to look clean and healthy because it is truly clean. Men can also use some of the same products women have been using too along with the men's products. But men usually feel less self-conscious buying and using men's products. You can even now find the organically based cleansers that so many like to use.
Cleansing is not the only thing you need to do to take care of your skin. You need to tone it too. To return the skin to the proper PH you have to use a toner after washing it. There are many different brands of toners in the stores today. You may have try more than one to find the one you like. As with the cleansers you can find one that is naturally based. You will love how your skin feels after giving it a good cleaning and toning.
A good routine to get into is shaving first then cleansing and toning. Then gently rub on some moisturizer that is water based. The water based ones are a less greasy and that is what your skin needs men. The moisturizer should be free of alcohol too because that dries the skin out and counteracts the moisturizing effect.
Skin cells do die when they get to the surface of your skin. You need to most of the time remove these for they do not always fall off by themselves. This process for removing dead skin cells is called ex foliation. You can use special products on the market today for this purpose and should do this at least once a week. You usually do this after cleansing or along with cleansing your face. Some face washes may ex foliate too.
For the body there are many different types of body washes you can wash with. These like the facial wash mixtures cleanse better and rinse away better than soap does. The cosmetic industry is now realizing that men need these products specifically designed for them and is bringing out more products all the time.
Sunscreen needs to be discussed now. UVA and UVB rays from the sun can be very harmful to the skin causing anywhere from sunburns to skin cancer in a men and women both. You men are usually outside in the elements more than women so you need sunscreen even more than they do. A good sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended if you are going to be outside for any length of time. You will also have to redo the application of it throughout the day. Lip balm with a high SPF is also recommended for your lips.
Exercise and proper diet can help the skin too by stimulating it from the inside to be healthy. Drink the right amount of water too. Smoking and drinking alcohol can do harm to the skin so if you must do these things please do them in moderation. Men if you follow the few tips given here you will soon see a vast improvement in the health of your skin.

September 19, 2008 by Roberta · Leave a Comment
When it comes to the topic of skin care, no part of the body is more important than the face. The face is what people look at first, and where the most delicate skin on the body is. Therefore facial skin care is an incredibly important issue, one that should be taken seriously by everyone, regardless of their age.
If you are not in your thirties or forties does it mean that you do not have to worry so much about facial skin care? This is the mistake that most people are making. Actually it will be much better to start using facial skin care products as young as possible because your skin will last longer and look better this way.
