Mineral oil is a petrochemical product and is derived from the distillation of crude oil, but if you look on the label of the skin care products you may be using now you may not see it listed there because it can go under any one of 10 or more different names.
Mineral oil has no moisturizing properties. The intention is that it will coat the skin with a thin film of oil which will help prevent moisture loss from the skin. However mineral oil does not add any moisture to the skin, and when it forms a layer of oil over the skin it can cause problems such as acne and it can also prevent the skin from eliminating toxins through the pores.
Mineral oil has been linked to cancer as well as allergies and irritation of the skin and eyes. It can be absorbed into the body small amounts where it can create vitamin deficiency problems.
Why then is mineral oil used in so many skin care products and anti aging products such as anti aging moisturizers for oily skin? There is one simple reason. Mineral oil is exceedingly cheap, costing almost nothing.
There are many excellent alternatives to the use of mineral oil in moisturizers for oily skin or even moisturizers the dry skin. There are many natural ingredients which work exceedingly well as skin moisturizers and have been known to be effective at promoting better skin health for generations. Shea butter, avocado extract and babassu oil are 3 examples however there are many more examples of natural ingredients which are well known to be effective skin moisturizers.
And it's perfectly possible to buy outstanding natural skin care products which use ingredients like these to produce an excellent result at increasing skin moisture levels.
