Understanding Warts
Warts are unsightly tumors that grow on the skin normal seen on fingers and hands but can potentially affect any area of skin and sometimes actually found inside the mouth but increasingly on the genitals. The common wart which is more than likely those found on someone's fingers or hands are still contagious if they are touched but it is not uncommon for someone to contract warts from using the towel of someone who has the condition.
With the exception of warts that are found on the soles of the feet, warts are usually quite painless but genital warts are highly contagious; caught during acts of sex, even oral. Strangely, warts only seem to affect people after the age of three and women can actually have them inside the vagina and be completely unaware they are there.
A tiny cut or scratch can make any area of skin more vulnerable to warts and, if a child picks at a wart, it can spread to other parts of the body but warts don't generally cause any problems, so it's not always necessary to have them removed, unless you have concerns. Stopping warts from spreading is generally the best reason to have them removed especially with children who are more likely to pick at them. Although many people by preparations to remove warts and verrucas, others will go to their doctor who treat them with liquid nitrogen; however, this treatment does take more than one application.
Common warts are a type of infection caused by viruses in the human papillomavirus family but there are many different types. There are more than 100 types of human papillomavirus viruses; some types of human papillomavirus tend to cause warts on the skin, while other types focus on the genitals and rectal area. {The 100 hundred different type of wart in the human papillomavirus group are quite focused in the areas they attack including those that are found in the genitalia.}
It is still unknown why some people are more susceptible to warts than others and some are so sensitive they can even get them from biting their finger nails which spread to the fingertips. Common warts appear most often on the tops of the fingers and hands, usually along the cuticles, as rough, thick, cauliflower like papules that develop on their own or in large numbers and often contain one or more tiny black dots, that are actually small, clotted blood vessels.
The small flat skin colored papules are in fact flat warts and are more likely to be seen on the face legs and arms sometimes in very large groups which may contain hundreds of them. Anal and genital warts are much more serious not just because they are highly infectious but they are in particularly sensitive areas of the body and can be found internally, even inside the urethra.
Often warts disappear on their own, although it may take many months, or even years, for the warts to go away but some warts won't go away on their own and this is where over-the-counter options are useful. Treatments available to remove warts and verrucas are generally easily obtained from a drugstore and contain salicylic acid which is very good but the cleaning regime during the treatment is very specific and must be followed.
